Senior Pastor Job Description - Pisgah Baptist Church

  1. PBC Bylaw Qualifications:  
    • The qualifications for pastoral service are outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7;  2 Timothy 2:15, 22-25;  Titus 1:5-9.
    • The functions of pastors is outlined in Acts 15:4, 6, 22; 20:28;  Ephesians 4:11-13;  1 Timothy 1:5; 4:7, 15-16; 5:17-22;  2 Timothy 1:13-14; 2:14-17, 22-25; 4:1-2, 5; Titus 1:9;  Hebrews 13:7, 17; James 5:14; 1 Peter 5:1-4.
  2. Principle Function:
    • The pastor is to be the spiritual leader of the church.  He is to live the Christian life as the example for those whom he leads.  He is responsible to the Lord and the church to primarily proclaim the gospel and teach Scripture.  He is also to engage in pastoral care and provide supervisory leadership in all areas of the church.
  3. Ministry Requirements and Responsibilities -
    • Personal Life:
      • Live the Christian life in all faithfulness according to the clear teaching of Scripture and sanctification of the Holy Spirit; raising his family in like manner
      • Be devoted to prayer, careful study of Scripture and handling Scripture in exegetical and expositional preaching and teaching.
      • Proclaim the gospel and lead the church in proclaiming the gospel to the church and community.
      • Live a life of repentance.
    •  Areas of Accountability:
      • Oversee paid and volunteer church staff to include supervising the church staff in accordance with the church’s financial and personnel policies and procedures.
      • Work in consultation with other pastors as necessary.  Senior pastor is defined as senior among equals.
      • Oversee the preparation of the annual budget in consultation with the finance committee as outlined in the church bylaws.
      • Oversee the church calendar in cooperation with the church secretary. 
      • Oversee the planning and conducting of worship services, preaching and teaching; pastoral care of members, people attending and prospective members; conduct grief counseling and funerals; premarital counseling and weddings in accordance with church marriage declaration; baptisms; Lord’s Supper; baby dedications; and leading in the discipling of new members.
      • Work with deacons and participate in their meetings. (Deacons responsibilities are defined by the church bylaws as being servants and not having oversight responsibilities except under certain conditions).
      • Oversee church business meetings.  
      • Oversee as ex-officio member the work of all committees as outlined in the church by-laws.
      • Cast vision for the direction of the church and for evangelism within the community.
      • Cooperate with Clay-Platte Baptist Association, Missouri Baptist Convention, Southern Baptist Convention leadership in all matters of mutual interest and concern; and affirm as guide the Baptist Faith and Message as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention June 14, 2000.
      • Perform all functions of the pastor as outlined in the PBC Constitution and Bylaws that may have been omitted from this job description.
