Q. Are Christians supposed to be Republican?
A. Here are some points to consider in developing a response to your question:
1. A Christian is to be obedient to Christ. It seems difficult at times to know how this obedience works out in the public arena and yet it is quite simple. You are to make sure your loyalties remain with Christ no matter what the issues may be. The more familiar you are with the Bible the sharper your discernment will be.
2. Romans chapter 13 clearly states that government is a servant/minister of God. God has established and uses government to protect healthy society. God is not Republican, Democrat, or Libertarian.
3. A Christian should be informed. God has blessed us with the freedoms and responsibilities of a free democracy. You have a stewardship responsibility to make sure that you do not waste your opportunities as a citizen of democracy.
4. A Christian should approach political issues, candidates, or legislation asking the question, ‘Which perspective, candidate, or piece of legislation supports the Biblical view of life, government, and law?’ Since political parties have a tremendous impact on what takes place in life, government, and law, you should also ask, ‘Are Democrats living up to their role as servants/ministers of God?’ ‘Are Republicans living up to their role as servants/ministers of God?’ Answering these questions can be difficult.
Remember, you as a Christian are to be loyal to Christ above all. Ask your Representatives and Senators the tough probing questions. Stay informed. Evaluate political issues Biblically. If you do these things, then you should be ok no matter what your political affiliation may be.
